How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Research status
Evidence: His son's 1844 baptism and his own 1870 burial entry, both read from the register. Weak or missing: His 1804 birth register has now been read too; it names his mother as Anna Maria Busch, so the parents on his burial entry are his father and stepmother. Not yet confirmed. Bürger und Schuhmachermeister
citizen and master shoemaker — on his son's
baptism register,
Kirchberg an der Jagst, 28 April 1844
S69Burial2026
🆕
A shoemaker at the end of his life too — his own burial entry says so,
21 September 2026.
Image 639 of the same register has now been read at his own
row: burial entry
no. 3 of 1870, which names him
Schuhmachermeister in Kirchberg a/J.
S135.
That resolves the conflict this card carried for a day. Three parish entries
name his trade: his son's baptism in
1844
S69 and his own burial in
1870 S135 both say
shoemaker; only his widow's entry of
August 1872
S133 calls him a
Schullehrer — a schoolteacher — and that one was written
two years after
he was dead, in a column describing a late husband.
Two contemporaneous
readings against one posthumous one. The
Schullehrer reading stays on
this page as a recorded variant; it is not deleted, and a village schoolteacher
really was often a tradesman with letters. But the trade this page carries for him
is
master shoemakerDeath1870
🆕 The 1870 entry checks its own arithmetic. It gives his age at death as
65 years, 6 months and 10 days
which counts forward from the birth it
records,
25 July 1804, to
exactly 4 February 1870, the death date it
records. Birth and death corroborate each other
inside a single record,
which no index can do. He was buried on
7 February 1870 at ten in the morning

S12Parents2026
🆕 His parents are no longer index-only. Until 21 September 2026 their names
sat on this card on the strength of a transcription. They have now been read off the
register image, and it gives more than the index held: his father
Johann Leonhard David Prüger was a Maler
a painter —
in
Erkenbrechtshausen, the same village recorded as Georg's own birthplace
S12; the entry names as his mother
Eva Barbara, née Schmid, a maiden name no index carried. Both were marked
dead by February 1870. ⚠️
Eva Barbara was his stepmother: his 1804 birth register, read 25 September 2026, names his mother as Anna Maria Busch
S591. ⚠️ Her surname may be written
Schmid or
Schmidt — the last stroke does not decide it, and it is not forced here

User-contributed; event lists are treated as PROBABLE unless separately sourced. - S69Carl Julius Prüger — Lutheran baptism, Kirchberg an der Jagst (Oberamt Gerabronn), Württemberg, 28 April 1844. Württemberg, Germany, Lutheran Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1500–1985 (Ancestry collection 61023), retrieved 16 September 2026. Born 15 April 1844, between 11 and 12 noon, baptised 28 April 1844 at Kirchberg an der Jagst, Oberamt Gerabronn, Württemberg — the register writes the place Gerabronn, Kirchberg u. Oa. (today Baden-Württemberg); father Georg Melchior Julius Prüger, Bürger und Schuhmachermeister dahier; mother Elisabeth Catharina geb. Lösch. Entry no. 22, original scan 5759 × 4607 px. The record that ended the "somewhere in Germany" wall on this line, and the origin of the Prüger spelling that was anglicised to Proeger in America. The identification rests on an exact birth-date match with S68, not on the name alone. ⚠ Superseded note, corrected 20 September 2026: this entry previously said the mother's name was lost in the binding fold and that her surname came from S68 alone. That was a limitation of a low-resolution screenshot, not of the record — at full resolution the line is legible, and the Schrift im Falz verdeckt flag on the film refers to a gutter this entry sits clear of. The register names the mother, and it is the best of the three readings of her given name — see S122. The parish is Kirchberg an der Jagst and the Oberamt is Gerabronn: the siblings' entries read Kirchberg (OA. Gerabronn), and Julius gave Kirchberg as his home to the Hamburg clerk in 1865.
- S133Elisabetha Sabina (Lösch) Prüger — burial register, Kirchberg u. Oa., 14 August 1872. Evangelische Kirche Kirchberg (OA. Gerabronn), Heiraten u. Tote 1784–1896, image 656 of 706, burial entry no. 534; Landeskirchliches Archiv Stuttgart, through Württemberg, Germany, Lutheran Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1500–1985 (Ancestry collection 61023, record 15195655). Read from the register image at full resolution, 4796 × 4013 px, 21 September 2026. Died 12 August 1872 at five in the morning, a Wittwe (widow) of Kirchberg; buried 14 August at ten; age at death given as 69 years, 3 months, 14 days. Father Johann Heinrich Melchior Lösch, Glasermeister of Crailsheim, marked deceased; mother Maria Dorothea geb. Muck, marked deceased; her late husband named in the entry as a Schullehrer in Kirchberg. The register settles a surname, a death date and a trade, and refuses to settle a birth date. The Ancestry index of this same entry reads her surname as something else entirely — a misread of the Kurrent. The register names her father a Lösch of Crailsheim, which is the birthplace the German deaths index independently gives her, and her son's 1924 Pittsburgh death certificate [S68] gives his mother's maiden name as Loesch. Two record images, two continents, one surname. On the death date the two Ancestry indexes disagreed — 13 August in collection 61023, 12 August in collection 9868; the image says 12 August, and collection 9868 is the one that was right. On the birth date the stated age counts back to late April 1803, against the index's 26 May 1803; those digits are at the edge of legibility even at 4796 px and are not forced here. The record that would settle it is her baptism at Crailsheim, which is not in this corpus. ⚠ Read at full resolution on purpose. At the 600 px tier this page was illegible and an earlier pass misattributed the parents' column to her husband; the correction is what the full-resolution image is for.
- S135Georg Melchior Julius Prüger — his own burial register entry, Kirchberg u. Oa., 7 February 1870. Evangelische Kirche Kirchberg (OA. Gerabronn), Heiraten u. Tote 1784–1896, image 639 of 706, burial entry no. 3 of 1870 (page column 634, running no. 205); Landeskirchliches Archiv Stuttgart, through Württemberg, Germany, Lutheran Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1500–1985 (Ancestry collection 61023, record 15195522). Read from the register image at full resolution, 5041 × 4061 px, 21 September 2026. Named Georg Melchior Julius Prüger, Schuhmachermeister in Kirchberg a/J.; born 25 Juli 1804; died 4 February 1870 at seven in the evening, buried 7 February at ten in the morning; age at death 65 years, 6 months, 10 days. Parents, both marked deceased: Johann Leonhard David Prüger, Maler (painter) in Erkenbrechtshausen, and Eva Barbara geb. Schmid. Wife named as Elisabetha Sab[ina] geb. Lösch. This is the entry that settles his trade, and it settles it against the schoolteacher. Three register images now name his occupation: his son's 1844 baptism [S69] and his own burial here both say Schuhmachermeister; only his widow's 1872 entry [S133] says Schullehrer, and that one was written two years after he was dead, in a column describing a late husband. Two contemporaneous readings against one posthumous one. The 1872 reading is kept on this page as a variant and is not deleted. ⚠ The entry also checks itself. The stated age of 65 years, 6 months and 10 days counts forward from the stated birth of 25 July 1804 to exactly 4 February 1870 — the stated death date, to the day. Birth and death corroborate each other inside one record, which no index can do. ⚠ The parentage is no longer index-only. It was carried here from Ancestry's transcription until this reading; the names are now off the image, and the image adds a trade and a maiden name that no index held. The father's residence, Erkenbrechtshausen, is the same village this page already records as Georg's own birthplace [S12] — independently recorded, and the match is what confirmed the reading of a difficult compound. The mother's surname may be written Schmid or Schmidt; the terminal stroke does not decide it and it is not forced here. ⚠ Corrected 26 September 2026: his 1804 birth register [S591] names his mother as Anna Maria Busch. Eva Barbara Schmid(t) was his stepmother, his father's second wife from 1806, and she raised him.
- S591Württemberg, Germany, Lutheran Parish Registers — Triensbach, births 1804, p. 9, no. 10: Georg Melchior Julius Proeger, 25 July 1804. Ancestry record 16796853, image 1860313-00512. Image examined, read 25 September 2026. Confirmed Son of Johann Leonhard David, Tüncher Mstr. at Erkenbrechtshausen, and Maria geb. Büschin (Anna Maria Busch); born at Erkenbrechtshausen. This is his birth register, and it names his mother as Anna Maria Busch, not Eva Barbara Schmid. The 1835 marriage index and the 1870 burial name Eva Barbara, his stepmother, who raised him.
