How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Research status
Research status: PROBABLE — from compiled lineage books only: SAR application 27139
S498 and the DAR Lineage Book
S499. The two disagree on her birth: the SAR says 1759, the DAR 1739. Her tombstone, as copied in a family book, and a second DAR entry both give 1759
S750S751 Evidence: SAR application 27139, the DAR Lineage Book, her father Thomas Burrus's 1788 will, which names 'my daughter Jane Quisenberry', and her tombstone as a Quisenberry family book copies it: born 5 July 1759, died 3 November 1811; a Burris family typescript agrees on her marriage and death. Weak or missing: The will names neither her husband nor her age; her dates come from a book's copy of the stone, not the stone itself, and one DAR entry gives 1739. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Life in the order the records give it
Birth1759
Born
5 July 1759, Orange County, Virginia; died
3 November 1811, Clark County, Kentucky (her tombstone, as a family book copies it
S750); one DAR entry's 1739 is not supported by anything read
Record1776
🆕 A typescript history of the Burris family lists her as the ninth of Thomas Burris's children, married at seventeen on 4 December 1776 to James Quisenberry, “who was the same age”, and dead on 3 November 1811
S763. It prints her birth year as 1755, a slip, since it makes her James's age and her stone says 1759. Her sister
Frances Tandy Burris married William Bush, “
Captain Billy Bush” (1746–1815), son of Philip Bush Sr., on 9 December 1778, and her sister Mourning married Thomas Graves Jr. in 1791. A compiled typescript, not a record. added 26 September 2026.
Family parents, marriages, children, siblings
Parents1788
🆕 Her father's will, written 2 October 1788 and proved 23 March 1789 in Orange County, Virginia (Will Book 3), names “
my daughter Jane Quisenberry” and “my grand Daughter Frances Quisenberry the Daughter of Jane Quisenberry”
S645. It is the first original record for her. It shows that she was Thomas Burrus's daughter and married to a Quisenberry by 1788, but it does not name her husband or give her age, so her birth year is still open. added 26 September 2026.
Marriage1776
🆕 Her tombstone in Clark County, Kentucky, as copied into a Quisenberry family book, calls her the consort of Rev. James Quisenberry, married
4 December 1776, the mother of thirteen children, born in Orange County, Virginia, on 5 July 1759, and dead on 3 November 1811, aged 52 years, 3 months and 27 days
S750 Probable confirm or correct →. A second DAR entry, for Lilla May Duncan, also gives her as 1759–1811
S751. What is weak: this is a book's copy of the stone, not the stone itself; but the age at death checks out against both dates. added 26 September 2026.
Parents1788
🆕 Her mother:
Frances Tandy Probable confirm or correct →, by DAR Lineage Book no. 112604, “Thomas Burris m. Frances Tandy”
S751; her father's 1788 will names his wife Frances
S645. Accepted by Earl as probable; what is weak: only compiled books give the name Tandy, and the will does not say Frances was Jane's mother. added 28 September 2026.

- S498U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications — national no. 27139, James Marvin Hinkle, 1914. Ancestry record 315470. Image examined, read 25 September 2026. Probable A great-grandson's lineage: Colby Burris Quisenberry (1788–1870) and Lucy Bush (1790–1872), married 1810; Lucy the daughter of Francis Bush and Rachel Martin (his second wife); Francis Bush born 23 February 1750, Orange County, Virginia, died 1836, Clark County, a private in the 2nd Virginia. The supplemental line gives Colby's parents as James Quisenberry (1759–1830) and Jane Burris, married 1776. A compiled lineage of 1914, not a record, so the parents are probable. The cover sheet is record 315462.
- S499DAR Lineage Book, p. 189, no. 88597: Miss Elizabeth B. Karr. Ancestry record 2609444. Image examined, read 25 September 2026. Probable Descent through Colby Burris Quisenberry Jr. (1822–1907), who married Sallie Tribble in 1847, from Colby Burris Quisenberry (1788–1870) and Lucy Bush (1790–1872), married 1810, and from James Quisenberry (1759–1830), born Spotsylvania County, Virginia, died Clark County, Kentucky, a private in the Virginia militia. A printed compilation. It agrees with the SAR application (S498).
- S645Will of Thomas Burrus, Orange County, Virginia, Will Book 3, pp. 190–191. Ancestry record 2478859. Image examined, read 25 September 2026. Confirmed Dated 2 October 1788, proved 23 March 1789. It names “my daughter Jane Quisenberry” and “my grand Daughter Frances Quisenberry the Daughter of Jane Quisenberry”; his wife Frances; sons Thomas, William Tandy and Roger; daughters Mourning, Fanny Embry, Mildred Embry(?), Elizabeth Brockman, Sally Tribble and Frances Tandy Bush.
- S750Genealogical Memoranda of the Quisenberry Family, appendix p. 192: epitaphs of Rev. James and Jane Quisenberry, Clark County, Kentucky. Ancestry record 191. Image examined, read 26 September 2026. Probable Jane Quisenberry, “consort of Rev. James Quisenberry, to whom she was married December 4, 1776”, thirteen children; born in Orange County, Virginia, 5 July 1759; died 3 November 1811, aged 52 years, 3 months and 27 days. Rev. James: born in Orange County, “of English parentage”, 13 June 1759; married Jane Burrus “in the 18th year of his age”, seven sons and six daughters; married Chloe Shipp of Clark County on 24 December 1811, eleven children; moved to Kentucky in 1783; died 5 August 1830, aged 71 years, 1 month and 22 days. The page also prints an 1895 War Department letter on Thomas Burrace (Burris)'s service in the 3rd Virginia, 1776–1779. A family book's transcription of the stones, not the stones themselves. The ages at death agree with the dates given.
- S751DAR Lineage Book, p. 197, no. 112604: Miss Lilla May Duncan. Ancestry record 3494636. Image examined, read 26 September 2026. Probable Descent through Joyce Quisenberry (b. 1777) and James Duncan to “James Quisenberry m. 1776 Jane Burris (1759–1811)”, daughter of Thomas Burris and Frances Tandy; Thomas Burris a sergeant in the 3rd Virginia, died in Virginia in 1789. A compiled lineage book.
- S763Typescript family history (U.S., Family History Books), p. 59: the children of Thomas Burris. Ancestry record 4341918106. Image examined, read 26 September 2026. Probable Item 9: Jane Burris, born 5 July “1755”, Orange County, Virginia, died 3 November 1811, married 4 December 1776 Rev. James Quisenberry (born 13 June 1759, Spotsylvania County; died 5 August 1830, Clark County, Kentucky), son of Aaron and Joyce Quisenberry, whose family moved to Orange County when he was ten; he married at seventeen Jane Burris, “who was the same age”; seven sons and six daughters. Item 10: her sister Frances Tandy Burris married on 9 December 1778 William Bush, “Captain Billy Bush” (1746–1815), son of Philip Bush Sr., founder of the Bush Settlement in Clark County. Item 11: Mourning Burris married Thomas Graves Jr., 5 February 1791. A compiled typescript that cites the Genealogical Memoranda (S750). Its 1755 is a slip: the same page makes Jane the same age as James, born 1759, and her stone gives 1759.
