How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Research status
Research status: PROBABLE — from compiled lineage books only: SAR application 27139
S498 and DAR Lineage Book no. 141325
S500. The DAR book makes her Francis Bush's second wife, so she may be Lucy's stepmother rather than her mother. Her parents: John Martin and Rachel Pierce by a supplemental SAR application and the DAR
S764S500, the Pace family book says Rachel Pace
S749. This record goes with
Rachel Pierce as probable and keeps Pace as the alternate reading
Evidence: SAR application 27139 and DAR Lineage Book no. 141325, which calls her Francis Bush's second wife; a Rachel Bush, 45 or over, heading a Clark County household in 1820; Rachael Bush, 93, blind, with Fielding Bush in Clark County in 1860; a supplemental SAR application naming her parents as John Martin and Rachel Pierce. Weak or missing: She may be Lucy's stepmother, not her mother; the 1820 house has no older man though Francis is said to have lived to 1836; her mother is given here as Rachel Pierce (SAR and DAR), with Rachel Pace (a Pace family book) as the alternate reading. Life in the order the records give it
Note1767
1767–1860 (lineage books)
Census1820
🆕 In 1820 a
Rachel Bush, 45 or over, headed a household in Clark County, Kentucky, with two young men and a girl, among the Martin households
S650. Her age fits a birth in 1767. The index gives her ten slaves; the image shows none.
Probable confirm or correct → What is weak: there is no older man in the house, yet the lineage books have Francis living until 1836. Either he was away or dead by 1820, or this is another Rachel. If you know more, use “Add to this record”. added 26 September 2026.
Death1768
🆕 A Pace family book gives her birth as
22 August 1768 in
Fluvanna County, Virginia, her death in 1860, and her parents as John Martin and
Rachel Pace, and calls her Francis Bush's second wife
S749 Probable confirm or correct →. What is weak: it is a compiled book, not a record; it leaves the marriage year blank; and her age of 93 in 1860 points to 1767, not 1768. added 26 September 2026.
Family parents, marriages, children, siblings
Children1860
🆕 On 26 June 1860
Rachael Bush,
93, blind, born in Virginia, was living in Clark County, Kentucky, with Fielding Bush, 63, a farmer, probably her son
S702. It is the first record made in her lifetime that fits the lineage books' 1767 birth and 1860 death. added 26 September 2026.
Parents1915
🆕
Her mother: probably Rachel Pierce; the alternate reading is Rachel Pace. A supplemental SAR application on number 27139, approved in 1915, gives her parents as
John Martin (1746–1830), a private in Capt.
Samuel Hawes's company of the 2nd Virginia Regiment from 16 September 1775, who settled in Clark County, Kentucky, and was pensioned in 1820, and
Rachel Pierce S764. DAR no. 141325 also says Rachel Pierce
S500. The Pace family book says
Rachel Pace S749.
Probable confirm or correct → Why Pierce leads: a lineage application that sets out its evidence for the Revolutionary service, and was checked and approved on it, outweighs a compiled family book that cites nothing for the name, and the DAR entry agrees with it.
What is weak: none of the three is a record made in her lifetime, none cites a marriage record for John Martin, and Pierce and Pace could be one name misread. A marriage or probate record naming John Martin's wife would settle it; if you have one, use “Add to this record”. added 26 September 2026; Pierce made the lead reading 27 September 2026.
Parents1768
🆕 Her parents:
Lieut. John Martin and
Rachel Pace (or Pierce)
Probable confirm or correct →. A FamilySearch index of Virginia christenings has a
Rachel Martin born 22 August 1768 and christened 15 October 1768 in St James Northam Parish, Goochland County, daughter of John Martin and
Rachel Pace S857, and a John Martin married Rachel Peace or Pace in that parish on 3 January 1757
S858. This record, independent of the lineage books, leans to Pace; Earl accepted both parents as probable. What is weak: both are indexes with no image read, and the 1768 child is matched to her by name, parish and date only. added 28 September 2026.

- S498U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications — national no. 27139, James Marvin Hinkle, 1914. Ancestry record 315470. Image examined, read 25 September 2026. Probable A great-grandson's lineage: Colby Burris Quisenberry (1788–1870) and Lucy Bush (1790–1872), married 1810; Lucy the daughter of Francis Bush and Rachel Martin (his second wife); Francis Bush born 23 February 1750, Orange County, Virginia, died 1836, Clark County, a private in the 2nd Virginia. The supplemental line gives Colby's parents as James Quisenberry (1759–1830) and Jane Burris, married 1776. A compiled lineage of 1914, not a record, so the parents are probable. The cover sheet is record 315462.
- S500DAR Lineage Book, p. 101, no. 141325: Mrs. Electra Helm Withers. Ancestry record 3600439. Image examined, read 25 September 2026. Probable Descent through Joyce Duncan Quisenberry (1828–1911), wife of Joseph H. Withers, from Colby Burris Quisenberry and Lucy Bush; Francis Bush married second Rachel Martin (1767–1860), daughter of Lieut. John Martin and Rachel Pierce. It gives Jane Burris's birth as 1739, where the SAR application (S498) says 1759. Both are recorded.
- S6501820 U.S. census — Clark County, Kentucky. Ancestry record 71929. Image examined, read 25 September 2026. Confirmed Rachel Bush, head: one woman 45 or over, two young men 16–26 and a girl 10–16. Next to William, Hudson and John Martin Jr.; Zachariah Bush on the same sheet. The Ancestry index gives her ten slaves; the image shows none. The ten belong to William Martin on the line above.
- S7021860 U.S. census, District 2, Clark County, Kentucky, dwelling 220. Ancestry record 39299525. Image examined, read 26 September 2026. Confirmed Rachael Bush, 93, born Virginia, blind, in the household of Fielding Bush, 63, farmer; enumerated 26 June 1860.
- S749Noble Hamilton Pace, Pace: One of America's Earliest Emigrant Families, p. 36. Ancestry record 4402087619. Image examined, read 25 September 2026. Probable Rachel, born 22 August 1768 in Fluvanna County, Virginia, died 1860, married Francis Bush on 27 February (year left blank) as his second wife; a daughter of John Martin and Rachel Pace. A compiled family book, not a record; it cites Rev. Douglas' Register of Goochland County. The index's “2017” marriage year is not on the page.
- S764U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications — national no. 27139, James Marvin Hinkle, supplemental application, 1915. Ancestry record 315493. Image examined, read 26 September 2026. Probable A supplemental on the same national number as S498, approved 11 May 1915, carrying Hinkle's line one generation further: through Emily Alice Quisenberry, James Francis Quisenberry, Colby Burris Quisenberry and Lucy Bush, and Francis Bush and Rachel Martin (1767–1860), to her parents John Martin (1746–1830) and Rachel Pierce. John Martin, born in Virginia in 1746, a private in Capt. Samuel Hawes's company, 2nd Virginia Regiment, Continental Line, enlisted 16 September 1775 for three years, on the pay roll to August 1779, settled in Clark County, Kentucky, and was granted a pension in 1820. A compiled lineage claim, not a record; the service comes from War Department files. A Pace family book (S749) names Rachel's mother Rachel Pace; this application and DAR no. 141325 (S500) say Rachel Pierce. Both are kept.
- S857FamilySearch index, Virginia, Births and Christenings, 1584–1917 — Rachel Martin, 1768. FamilySearch ark:/61903/1:1:VRRC-WSZ. Index only; no image read (checked 28 September 2026). Probable Rachel Martin, born 22 August 1768, christened 15 October 1768, St James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia; parents John Martin and Rachel Pace. Independent of the SAR and DAR lineages, but an index with no image; it matches Rachel Martin Bush by name, parish and date only (the DAR gives 1767). A search for Rachel Bush, wife of Francis Bush, found nothing relevant.
- S858Virginia, Select Marriages (index) — John Martin and Rachel Peace or Pace, 3 January 1757. Indexed from a printed source, FHL 975.5 V2D. Index only; no image read (checked 28 September 2026).
