William Anderson Bowles
KentuckyConfirmed1858–1936
- Born 9 April 1858, Owsley County, Kentucky S160S22 — 🔑 the date no longer rests on Find a Grave. The Owsley County birth register for 1858 records it on row 5 in a county clerk's hand at the time: "April 9th", child Wm. A. Bowles, Alive, born Owsley Co., Ky S160. S160 is cited ahead of S22.
- 🔑 His parents are named on his own birth row, in words. The same register gives father Jas. Bowles and Maiden name of Mother: Lydia Williams S160 — the first documentary statement of the parent–child link anywhere in this research. Before it, the tie to James Daniel Bowles and Lydia Williams ran through Find a Grave S22 and through a son William, 12, of exactly the right age on the 1870 Owsley household S157. ⚠ Ancestry's index of that register carries no date at all; the date exists only on the image.
- ⚠️ His death certificate says 9 April 1856; the Owsley County birth record says 1858.
The memorial flags the discrepancy itself.
- 🆕 Dead by 1940: the Amarillo directory for that year lists his wife as “Iona B (wid W A)” S373; added 24 September 2026.
- 🆕 His death is in the Texas death index as certificate 23075, Taylor County, 3 April 1936 S557. A different William Anderson Bowles, of Wood County, died in 1940; he is not this man. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 His son James Daniel Bowles Probable confirm or correct →, born 23 January 1882 at Cass, Arkansas, died 20 November 1941 at Michigan City, LaPorte County, Indiana; his wife was Bessie Alice. He married her as Alice Bagby at Aurora, Lawrence County, Missouri, on 12 June 1912, by the licence, read from the image S938; in 1925 he was a clergyman living in the parsonage at Abilene, Kansas, with his wife Bessie A. and two sons S939. The Indiana death index names his parents as Wm A. Bowles and “Ioma” S890, and his Find a Grave memorial agrees S891; he is in Atwood, Kansas in 1930 S892 and Crown Point, Indiana in 1940 S893. He is the eldest son in the 1900 household S140: re-read at full resolution on 29 September 2026, the line gives James D., born probably January 1882 in Arkansas, where the earlier transcription had James E., June 1882. Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. What is weak: the death certificate is read from its index only, not the image, and the link to his parents rests on that index and Find a Grave. added 28 September 2026.
- 🆕 His son William Anderson Bowles Jr. Probable confirm or correct →, born 28 April 1893 at Elmdale, Taylor County, Texas, died 15 September 1957 at Pasadena, California, and buried at Rose Hills, by his Find a Grave memorial S899; the Social Security claims index names his wife as Evelyn J. Smith S900, and he is traced in the 1930, 1940 and 1950 censuses S901S902S903. He fits the William A., born April 1893 in Texas, of the 1900 household S140, and is probably the private William A. Bowles whose mother was “Bell Bowles” of Abilene in 1918 S773. Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. What is weak: no California marriage or death certificate has been read; his birth and death dates come from Find a Grave. added 28 September 2026.
- 🆕 His daughter Iona Belle Bowles Noonan Probable confirm or correct →, born 18 January 1895, died 10 September 1986, wife of Charles Francis Noonan; her Find a Grave memorial names the same parents S905. Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. The Iona B. Reah, 55, of Hermosa Beach in 1950, living with her sister Jean Julius S637, is this daughter: a 1936 directory lists her at Hermosa Beach as Iona B., wife of Glanton Reah, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce S940. What is weak: her dates and the Noonan marriage rest on Find a Grave alone, and whether Mrs Reah later became Mrs Noonan has not been checked. added 28 September 2026.
- 🆕 His son John Wesley Bowles Probable confirm or correct →, born 26 June 1902 at Potosi, Taylor County, died 6 December 1960 at Abilene; his Texas death certificate names his father as W. A. Bowles and his mother as “Belle Broach” S904. His own 1942 draft card, read from the image, gives the same birth date, 26 June 1902; it says Abilene, the county seat beside Potosi S934. He married Ethel Maude NeSmith, as a daughter's Texas birth certificate names her S936. In 1940 his household is on the same census sheet as his brother Alfred's family S935, and in 1950 he is the John W. Bowles, 47, farming next door to Alfred S743. The same birth date is given for his brother Thomas L. Bowles; John Wesley's is now settled from his own draft card, so whether they were twins turns on Thomas L.'s date, which is not yet checked. Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. What is weak: the link to his parents rests on the index of his death certificate, whose image has not been read. added 28 September 2026.
- 🆕 His son Robert Anthony Bowles Probable confirm or correct →, born 3 April 1904 at Potosi, Taylor County, died 27 February 1974 at Phoenix, Arizona; his wife was Geneva Annie Reynolds, as a daughter's 1932 Texas birth certificate names her S937. The Social Security death index gives 3 April 1904 and February 1974 S894; his Find a Grave memorial names his parents as William Anderson and Iona Belle S895. He registered for the draft S896 and lived in Amarillo in 1940 and 1950 S897S898, two doors from his brother Warren Debs S507. Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. What is weak: his Arizona death certificate has not been read, and the draft card gives 4 April. added 28 September 2026.
- 🆕 A William A. Bowles was appointed postmaster at Potosi, Taylor County, on 15 May 1907, succeeding William L. Simpson Probable confirm or correct → S988. Evidence: the name and the family's town; his son William Jr. was 14. Weak: the register gives no age or other identifier. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. added 29 September 2026
- 🆕 His son William Anderson Bowles Jr. signed his own 1942 draft card at 4706 Klamath Street, Los Angeles, giving his birth as 28 April 1893, Abilene, Texas Confirmed S1022. This puts the birth date on a record in his own hand; Abilene is the Taylor County seat. added 29 September 2026
- 🆕 His son William Anderson Bowles Jr. had registered for the First World War draft on 5 June 1917 in Precinct 9, Taylor County: aged 24, of Route 2, Abilene, born 28 April 1893 at Abilene, a farmer, single Confirmed S1082. The date agrees with his 1942 card. added 30 September 2026
- 🆕 William Jr. is probably the “Bales, William A”, 26, single, a farmer born in Texas to parents born in Kentucky, in Belvidere Township, Los Angeles County, in 1920 Probable confirm or correct → S1023. Evidence: his age, his birthplace and both parents’ birthplaces fit. Weak: the surname is spelled Bales. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. added 29 September 2026
- 🆕 His son James Daniel Bowles was a merchant with a music store at 302 North 5th Street, Rogers, Arkansas, in 1920, aged 37, with his wife Bessie A. and two sons Confirmed S1026. added 29 September 2026
- 🆕 His son Robert Anthony Bowles was single in April 1930, a roomer on Pierce Street in Amarillo and a presser in a dry-cleaning plant Confirmed S1027, so he married Geneva Reynolds between 1930 and 1932. added 29 September 2026
- 🆕 His son William A. Bowles Jr. and Evelyn J. were living at 4838 South Huntington Drive, Los Angeles, in 1932, where he was a clothes cleaner Confirmed S1119. That address falls between the ones in his 1930 and 1940 censuses.
- 🆕 In 1918 James D. Bowles, 36, born in Arkansas, was a preacher at Rogers, Benton County, Arkansas, when the birth of his second child, Richard William Bowles, born 1918, was registered; the mother is Bessie Bagby, 31, born in Missouri Confirmed S1142.

Photograph,Iona Belle Brock
KentuckyConfirmed1865–1947
- Born 31 December 1865, London, Laurel County, Kentucky
S170 S23
- Died 4 July 1947, Potosi, Taylor County, Texas, aged 81 years 6 months
3 days; buried Potosi, 6 July 1947 S170 S23
- Father Solomon Alfred Brock · mother's maiden name Matilda Howard,
both born Kentucky S170
- Cause of death coronary thrombosis; widowed; occupation housewife
S170
- 🔑 Updated 22 September 2026. Her own Texas
standard certificate of death, no. 31724, filed at Abilene on 11 July 1947 by the
local registrar — seven days after the death — has been read at full
resolution S170. Four facts move off Find a Grave onto it:
the birth date, the birthplace, the death date and the burial, all of which stood on
a memorial alone S23. S170 is cited ahead of S23 for all four.
And her parentage is stated in words for the first time — field 10 names
her father, field 12 her mother's maiden name — corroborating the 1865
Harlan County marriage register's Matildia Howard S151.
⚠ The caveat travels with it: the informant, Iona Reah of
Hermosa Beach, California, named for the deceased and almost certainly a daughter,
was reporting her own grandparents. Second-hand, far better than a
compiled memorial, and not primary. 🔑 London is the seat of Laurel
County — the county the 1860 census puts her father's family in
S167. The tree had the place from a memorial; it now has a
reason. 🔑 She is on the 1870 and 1880 schedules too: Iona B.,
4, in Valley Township, Madison County, Arkansas in July 1870 S153
— a reading her 1880 age of 14 settles against three earlier
alternatives — and Iona B., 14, eldest of six in her mother's
household at Hilburn Township in June 1880 S166.
- In 1910 she was the mother of 18 children born, 15 living S186. Widowed, she was living in 1940 with her daughter L. Jean Julius at 912 Buchanan, Amarillo S185.
- Married William Anderson Bowles on 24 December 1880 Confirmed, the date in the family typescript S72; she was still single at home in the June 1880 census S166, which a December wedding fits. Her brother John B. and her grandparents James and Elizabeth Brock have cards too
- 🆕 The 1940 Amarillo directory lists her as “Bowles Iona B (wid W A)” at 912 Buchanan, the address of the 1940 census S373; added 24 September 2026.
- 🆕 The 1950 census of Hermosa Beach lists Iona B. Reah, 55, born Texas, as the head of a household that included her sister Jean Julius S637, so the informant Iona Reah was Iona's daughter. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 A World War I transport list for Co. D, 111th Ammunition Train, 36th Division, has Bowles, William A., private first class, no. 1480433, whose person to notify is “Bell Bowles, mother, R.R. #2, Abilene, Texas” S773 Probable confirm or correct →. It puts the family on a rural route out of Abilene in 1918 and points to a son William A. who served in the war. What is weak: no other record read so far names this son. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Five more of her children Probable confirm or correct →: James Daniel Bowles (1882–1941), whose Indiana death index gives his mother as “Ioma” S890; William Anderson Bowles Jr. (1893–1957) S899; Iona Belle Bowles Noonan (1895–1986) S905; John Wesley Bowles (1902–1960), whose Texas death certificate gives his mother as “Belle Broach” S904; and Robert Anthony Bowles (1904–1974) S895. Details are on William Anderson Bowles's card. Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. What is weak: the death certificates are read from their indexes only, and two of the five rest mainly on Find a Grave. added 28 September 2026.

- 🆕 Willie Hollis Windham's father was probably Tom J. Windham Probable confirm or correct →: the 1920 census of Justice Precinct 4, Callahan County, Texas, read from the image, lists Willie H., son, under a year old, in the household of Tom J. Windham, 36, a farmer born in Texas, and his wife Mary C., 32, born Mississippi, with Myrtle O., Dorace O., Era C., Ada L. and Cecil C. S878. Dorace is the sister he named on his 1946 draft card S541, and his Social Security record, read from the FamilySearch index, names his parents as Tom Windham and Callie Crenshaw S879. What is weak: the Social Security record has not been read on the image, and Tom's middle name, given in family trees as Jefferson, and his birth day and death date are on no document read. Accepted by Earl on 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. added 28 September 2026.

Evidence: his Find a Grave memorial names his parents as William Anderson and Iona Belle and gives his birth at Potosi, Taylor County S895; the Social Security index gives the same birth date S894. What is weak or missing: Find a Grave is compiled, not a record; his Arizona death certificate has not been read; his draft card gives 4 April, not 3 April. Know more? Use ‘Add to this record’ to confirm or correct it. Card added 1 October 2026

- Daughter of William Anderson Bowles and Iona Belle Brock; sister of Lydia Mae Bowles
- Born 27 July 1907, Texas S186
- Died 18 January 1991
- 🆕 Married Elmo D. Blackburn (born 15 March 1904, by his own draft card S717) Probable confirm or correct →: the 1940 Amarillo, Texas census has Elmo Blackburn, 36, at 1601 Pierce with his wife Lily and a daughter named Iona B., after Lily's mother Iona Belle, and the 1949 Amarillo directory lists “Blackburn Elmo D (Lily)”. What is weak: the census gives the wife's age as 22, ten years off Lily's 1907 birth, and no marriage record has been found. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1930 she was 21, single, a waitress in Amarillo, living with her sister Jean and Harry Julius, the cafe manager and proprietor S615. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Her son Harald Dean Blackburn, a premature twin, died at St Anthony's Hospital in Amarillo on 8 December 1933, one day old. His death certificate names his parents as Elmo D. Blackburn and Lillie Bowles, born in Texas S697. It is the first record found that names her as Elmo's wife. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Elmo's own 1942 draft card gives his full name as Elmo David Blackburn, born 15 March 1904, of 1601 B Pierce Street, Amarillo, working for Southwestern Public Service Company S717. The card gives Amarillo as his birthplace, but that is self-reported and not yet settled. The 1940 Amarillo directory lists “Blackburn Elmo (Lily)”, a serviceman for the same company, at 1601b Pierce S720. The Texas birth index records their daughter Iona Beth Blackburn, born 26 April 1938 in Potter County, with her mother entered as Lily Olene Bowles and her father as David St. Elmo Blackburn S718. It is the first state record found that names Lily Olene Bowles as Elmo's wife, though no marriage record has yet been read. In 1950 Elmo, 46, married, ran his own electric shop from 2804 Taylor, Amarillo; no wife was listed with him on that sheet S719. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Elmo's parents were probably David J. Blackburn and Ruth E. Blackburn Probable confirm or correct →: the 1910 census of Salem Township, Lewis County, Missouri, read from the image, lists Elmo D., 6, son, in the household of David J. Blackburn, 38, a farmer, and his wife Ruth E., 32, the mother of three children, all living, with Bessie, 14, and Clarence, 11, all born in Missouri S873. His son's 1933 death certificate also gives Elmo's birthplace as Missouri S697. What is weak: nothing read ties the boy of 1910 to Lily's husband beyond his name, middle initial and age, and his 1942 draft card gives Amarillo as his birthplace S717; Ruth's maiden name, given in family trees as Tate, and both parents' birth days and death dates are on no document read. Accepted by Earl on 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. added 28 September 2026.

Warren Debs Bowles
ConfirmedSon of William Anderson Bowles · born 1910

- Died 31 May 1999
- 🆕 His 1940 draft card gives his birth as 9 August 1910 at Abilene, and his address as 1606 Johnson, Amarillo, working for the Texas Co. S505. In 1940 he lived there with his wife Opal, next to his brother T. L. S506; in 1950 he was a dry cleaner at 3907 E. 12th, with wife Opal and four sons, two doors from his brother Robert A. S507. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1937 he was a counterman for the Texas Co., at 1606 Johnson, Amarillo S556. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 His wife Opal's mother was probably Lena L. Bethany Probable confirm or correct →: the 1930 census of Amarillo, read from the image, lists Opal, 14, daughter, born Texas, at 1648 Johnson Street in the household of William H. Bethany, 38, and his wife Lena L., 39, both born Arkansas S885; the three were together in Amarillo in 1920 S886. The Texas birth index records a son of Warren Debs Bowles, born in Potter County in 1944, with his mother entered as Willie Opal Bethaney S887. What is weak: the census does not say Lena is Opal's mother, and a stepmother would be listed the same way; her maiden name, given in family trees as Stringer, and her dates are on no document read, and the trees' Texas birthplace for her conflicts with the census. Accepted by Earl on 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. added 28 September 2026.
- 🆕 The Texas birth index for 1910 lists his birth, on 9 August in Taylor County, as the unnamed infant of W. A. Bowles, certificate 53667 Confirmed S1169. The certificate itself has not been read.

Probable father of Matilda Pauline Howard · born about 1806
- Research status: PROBABLE — added 24 September 2026 and entered in the family tree the same day, labelled probable there too; no record states Matilda Pauline Howard's parentage in words. The evidence: the 1850 Harlan County census has “Paulina, 5” in John C. Howard's household (relationships not stated) S967; her 6 March 1865 wedding to Solomon Brock was held “at John C. Howard's” S151; and the Kentucky death records of Hiram B. Howard (1915) S455 and Jacob Howard (1933) name their parents as John Covey Howard and Matilda Brock
- Probable father of Matilda Pauline Howard, who married Solomon Alfred Brock and was the mother of Iona Belle Brock
- Born about 1806; of Pucketts Creek, Harlan County, Kentucky; died 1899
- Husband of Matilda Brock
- 🆕 In 1860 he was a farmer in Harlan County, 53, with land worth $2,000, a wife Mary, 35, and Elizabeth, 17. The rest of the household is on the next page, which has not been read. Mary was his second wife, after Matilda's death about 1855; the 1861 birth register below gives her maiden name, Morris S461. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1880 he was 72, farming in Harlan County, with his wife Polly, 45, and her father Littleton Morris, 80. He gave his father's birthplace as North Carolina and his mother's as Virginia S548. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1870 he was 64, a farmer in Harlan County with land worth $1,500, living with Mary, 37, keeping house; Jacob, 22, the son whose 1933 death record names him; and six others aged 3 to 18, whose relationships are not stated S625. The Harlan County birth register names the mother of his daughter Sarah, born 15 September 1861, as Mary Morris S626. So his second wife, the Mary of 1860 and 1870 and the Polly of 1880 who lived with her father Littleton Morris, was Mary Morris. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1840 John C. Howard headed a Harlan County household of eleven: a man of 30 to 40, as he would be if born about 1806, a man of 20 to 30, two women of 20 to 30, and seven children. Jacob, Larkin, Samuel and Wilkerson Howard lived nearby S642. The census names only the head. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 His parents: John Howard and Mary Risner Probable confirm or correct →. A query in Howards in Kentucky, p. 127, by his great-granddaughter Sudie F. Spillman of Harlan, names “their second son John Covey”, with brothers Larkin, William, Michael and Robert S864; his 1850 household includes a Larkin and a Michael S865. Accepted by Earl as probable; what is weak: the query is compiled and unsourced. added 28 September 2026.
- 🆕 The 1850 census page itself has now been read: he was 45, a farmer with $1,200 in land, in Harlan County, dwelling and family 342, with Michael, John, Larkin, Hiram, Nancy, Elizabeth, Mary, Paulina and Jacob, and no adult woman in the house Confirmed S967. The census gives no relationships. added 29 September 2026

Probable mother of Matilda Pauline Howard · born about 1812
- Research status: PROBABLE — added 24 September 2026 and entered in the family tree the same day, labelled probable there too; no record states Matilda Pauline Howard's parentage in words.
- Probable mother of Matilda Pauline Howard, and so grandmother of Iona Belle Brock; wife of John Covey Howard
- Born about 1812; died about 1855 and buried at Wallins Creek, Harlan County, Kentucky (Find a Grave only)
- 🆕 The 1915 death certificate of her son Hiram B. Howard, born 23 November 1837, has now been read on the image: it names his parents as John Cony [Covey] Howard and Matilda Brock S455. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 What is weak, newly: the 1850 census page for John C. Howard's household in Harlan County, now read on the image, has no adult woman in it; the youngest child, Jacob, was 3 S967. That sits awkwardly with the Find a Grave death about 1855. She may have been away, or dead by 1850. Know a record? Use “Add to this record”. added 29 September 2026

- Born 27 February 1870, Kentucky; married Robert Marion Carpenter, 2 October 1887, Franklin County, Arkansas
- Died 28 September 1920 at the Deaconess Hospital, Phoenix, Arizona, and buried at Greenwood; her death certificate names her father James Bowles and her mother's maiden name, Williams S158
- 🆕 Her first child, William Lacy Carpenter, was born on 29 July 1888 near Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, ten months after her marriage. His delayed birth certificate names his parents as Robert M. Carpenter and Lucinda Bowles, both born in Kentucky Confirmed S957. It was sworn in 1942 by his aunt, Nannie E. Evans of Wallowa, Oregon. The ages it gives the parents are recollections, and the site keeps her birth in 1870. added 29 September 2026
- 🆕 Her husband's family, probably: in 1880 a Robert, 14, born Kentucky, was a farm laborer in the Hilburn Township, Madison County, Arkansas household of William and Ala Carpenter, both born Kentucky, with eleven brothers and sisters Probable confirm or correct → S964. Evidence: his Kentucky birth, his age, the Arkansas home, and a daughter named Ala. What is weak: no record read yet names Robert Marion Carpenter's parents, and the 1880 age runs a year ahead of his November 1866 birth. added 29 September 2026
- 🆕 In 1880 Lucinda, 10, born Kentucky, was at school in Hilburn Township, Madison County, Arkansas, with Martha E., 12, and the Arkansas-born Sarah F., 7, and Lydia J., 5, in a household whose head, James Boles, is on the previous page (not read) Confirmed S983. added 29 September 2026

Carpenter, private first class in the 242nd Military Police Company, army no. 2311994, named “Mrs Lucinda Carpenter, mother, Phoenix, Arizona” as the person to notify when his company sailed from Liverpool after the First World War Probable confirm or correct → S984. Evidence: the surname, a mother named Lucinda, and Phoenix, where she died in 1920 S158. Weak: the list gives no age or birthplace, and no other record read names him as her son. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. added 29 September 2026
- 🆕 Her son Harry Charles Carpenter, 21, a soldier of R.F.D. 1, Phoenix, born at Prescott, Arizona, married Florence Ethel Snyder at Oswego, New York, on 11 January 1921. James Brock
ProbableEvidence: The 1850 and 1860 Kentucky censuses with Solomon in his home, a daughter's 1930 death record, and the 1880 Clay County census (a cooper, next door to William and Sabra Wilson). Weak or missing: No record calls Solomon his son, and his own father is only a same-page 1830 census neighbour. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Probable father of Solomon Alfred Brock · born about 1804
- Research status: PROBABLE — added 24 September 2026 and entered in the family tree the same day, labelled probable there too; no record states Solomon Alfred Brock's parentage in words. Solomon, 12 then 22, is in James Brock's household in the 1850 Harlan County census (dwelling 381: James 45, farmer, Elizabeth 46) S169 and the 1860 Laurel County census (dwelling 760: James 56, U.B. clergyman, Elizabeth 57) S167, with the same brothers and sisters both times; and his sister Sabra Brock Wilson's Kentucky death record (1930) names her parents as James Brock and Elizabeth Brock
- Probable father of Solomon Alfred Brock, and so grandfather of Iona Belle Brock
- Born about 1804, Kentucky; a farmer at Harlan County in 1850 and a United Brethren clergyman in Laurel County in 1860 S169S167
- Husband of Elizabeth “Betsy” Brock; he died between 1880 and 1900 S581S580
- 🆕 In 1830 he is on line 1 of the Harlan County census: a man and a woman aged 20–30 and three boys under five. A James Brock Senr, a couple aged 50–60, is on the same page and is a candidate for his father; that is not proven S462. His probable daughter Elizabeth Hoskins, born 26 April 1831, named him and “Betsy Howard” as her parents on her 1911 death certificate S454. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1880 he was 74, a cooper, at Bull Skin, Clay County, Kentucky, with Elizabeth, 76; he gave his parents' birthplace as Virginia. William Wilson and Sabra lived next door S581. Elizabeth was a widow by 1900 S580. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1870 he was 66, a minister of the gospel, in Buffalo Precinct, Owsley County, Kentucky, with Elizabeth, 64, and Hiram Hoskins, 13, and Lee Hoskins, 2, whose relationship is not stated. William H. and Sabra Wilson lived two doors away S630. His and Elizabeth's ages advance exactly from 1850 and 1860. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Probably his household in 1840: James Brock, head, in Harlan County, Kentucky, with a man and a woman aged 30–40, two boys under five, and five other children Probable confirm or correct → S1160. The evidence is the county, the same as the 1850 household S169, and the ages: he was born about 1804, Elizabeth about 1803, and Solomon Alfred in 1837 or 1838. What is weak: the 1840 census names only the head and gives tallies, not names, so nothing on the page proves this is the same James. Jesse Brock Jr. and Amy Brock lived on the same sheet, with five Howard households close by, which fits “Betsy Howard” as Elizabeth’s maiden name S454 but proves no kinship. If you know more, use “Add to this record”.

Elizabeth “Betsy” Brock
ProbableEvidence: The 1850 and 1860 Kentucky censuses with Solomon in James and Elizabeth's home, a daughter's 1930 death record, and the 1880 and 1900 Clay County censuses, the second listing her as William Wilson's mother-in-law. Weak or missing: No record calls Solomon her son; her maiden name Howard rests on one 1911 death certificate; its informant, H. D. Peters, was the undertaker and very probably the deceased's son-in-law. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Probable mother of Solomon Alfred Brock · born about 1803
- Research status: PROBABLE — added 24 September 2026 and entered in the family tree the same day, labelled probable there too; no record states Solomon Alfred Brock's parentage in words.
- Probable mother of Solomon Alfred Brock, and so grandmother of Iona Belle Brock; wife of James Brock
- Born about 1803, Kentucky; called Betsy. Her maiden name was probably Howard (see below)
- 🆕 Her maiden name was probably Howard. The 1911 death certificate of Elizabeth Hoskins, born 26 April 1831, names her parents as James Brock and Betsy Howard, both born in Harlan County. The informant, H. D. Peters, was also the undertaker, but very probably Elizabeth Hoskins's son-in-law Harden D. Peters, in whose home she lived in 1910 S748; it is still one source, so this stays probable until a second agrees S454. In 1830 she and James Brock are on line 1 of the Harlan County census, both aged 20–30, with three boys under five S462. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1900 she lived at Cornett, Clay County, Kentucky, in the home of William Wilson and his wife Sabra, listed as William's mother-in-law: born March 1803, 97, widowed, and the mother of 13 children, 3 of them living S580. In 1880 she, 76, and James lived next door to the same Wilsons S581. That makes Sabra her daughter. Neither record names Solomon, so he stays probable. added 25 September 2026.

Moses Williams
ProbableEvidence: The 1850 Owsley County census: Moses, 50, and Nancy, 48, with Lydia; in 1870 Moses, 69, and Nancy, 67, in Jackson County, Kentucky. Weak or missing: Neither census states relationships, and no record yet names Lydia as their daughter. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Probable father of Lydia Williams · born about 1800
- Research status: PROBABLE — added 24 September 2026 and entered in the family tree the same day, labelled probable there too; one 1850 census sheet, Owsley County, Kentucky S173, dwelling 281, lists Moses Williams, 50, farmer, real estate $750, born Tennessee, and Nancy, 48, with Lydia (born about 1835, Tennessee) in the household; relationships are not stated. The 1859 Moses Williams death lead was refuted — that record is a child of James and Lorinda Williams — and the names other users' trees give this couple are not used
- Probable father of Lydia Williams, wife of James Daniel Bowles and mother of William Anderson Bowles
- Born about 1800, Tennessee; husband of Nancy Williams; alive in 1870 S620, probably dead by June 1880 S635; death date not yet found
- 🆕 He was alive in 1870, aged 69, farming in McKee Precinct, Jackson County, Kentucky, with Nancy, 67; Riley Williams, 50, lived next door S620. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 He had probably died by June 1880, when a widowed Nanci Williams, 78, was living with Sam and Nancy Evans in Madison County, Arkansas S635. Nancy's card explains why she is probably his wife. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 His marriage, probably: W. M. Wilder's typescript says he married Nancy Wilder on 15 February 1819 in Hawkins County, Tennessee, that he served in the War of 1812 and died on 27 July 1874 in Madison County, Arkansas, and that his widow drew a pension Probable confirm or correct → S993S863. Weak: a compiled family history, not a register; his death date there is not on any record read. The widow's pension file would test all of it. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. added 29 September 2026
- 🆕 Probably his household in 1860: Moses Williams, 60, a farmer born in Tennessee, with real estate of $540, in Jackson County, Kentucky (P.O. McKee), with Nancy, 56, and George B., 20, Nancy Ann, 17, and Absalom, 15, all born in Tennessee Probable confirm or correct → S1172. The evidence is the pairing of Moses and Nancy, both born in Tennessee, as in Owsley County in 1850 S173, and the county: Jackson was formed partly from Owsley in 1858, and he is there again in 1870 S620. What is weak: the census states no relationships, Nancy’s age has moved eight years in ten, and Lydia, married by then, is not in the house, so nothing on this page ties him to her. If you know more, use “Add to this record”.

ProbableEvidence: The 1850 Owsley County census: Moses, 50, and Nancy, 48, with Lydia; in 1870 Nancy, 67, with Moses in Jackson County, Kentucky; in 1880 a widowed Nanci Williams, 78, with Sam and Nancy Evans in Madison County, Arkansas. Weak or missing: No census states her relationship to Lydia, her maiden name Wilder rests on a compiled family history alone, and the 1880 match rests on the Evans family, not on her own details. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Probable mother of Lydia Williams · born about 1802
- Research status: PROBABLE — added 24 September 2026 and entered in the family tree the same day, labelled probable there too; one 1850 census sheet, Owsley County, Kentucky S173, dwelling 281, lists Moses Williams, 50, farmer, real estate $750, born Tennessee, and Nancy, 48, with Lydia (born about 1835, Tennessee) in the household; relationships are not stated. The 1859 Moses Williams death lead was refuted — that record is a child of James and Lorinda Williams — and the names other users' trees give this couple are not used
- Probable mother of Lydia Williams, and so grandmother of William Anderson Bowles; wife of Moses Williams
- Born about 1802, Tennessee. No record read gives her maiden name; a compiled Wilder family history makes her Nancy Wilder (below)
- 🆕 In 1870 she and Moses were in McKee Precinct, Jackson County, Kentucky: Nancy, 67, keeping house, born Tennessee S620. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 In June 1880 a Nanci Williams, 78, widowed, born Tennessee, was living in Boston Township, Madison County, Arkansas, as the mother-in-law in the home of Sam Evans, 43, and his wife Nancy, 37, born Tennessee S635. A Samuel and Nancy Ann Evans lived next door to Moses and Nancy in 1870 S620, and the Evanses' two eldest children were born in Kentucky. Probable confirm or correct → This is probably her; if so, Nancy Ann Evans was her daughter and Moses had died by 1880. Sam's age is twelve years on from 1870, not ten, so the match rests mainly on Nancy Ann and the children's birthplaces. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Her parents: James Wilder and Nancy Hays Probable confirm or correct →. W. M. Wilder's typescript family history, p. 571, lists “Nancy Wilder (dau of James & Nancy Hays Wilder) b in Tenn. abt 1802 d in Madison Co., Ark. after 1878, m Moses Williams” S863, which fits her 1850 and 1880 census entries. Accepted by Earl as probable; what is weak: a compiled history is the only source. added 28 September 2026.
- 🆕 Her marriage, probably: the full page of W. M. Wilder's typescript says she and Moses Williams married on 15 February 1819 in Hawkins County, Tennessee, and names a son, Sampson Williams, born in Hawkins County about 1825 Probable confirm or correct → S993. Evidence: the same entry that names her parents S863. Weak: it is a compiled family history by one author, not a marriage register, and no register has been read. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. added 29 September 2026

John B. Brock
ProbableEvidence: The 1880 Arkansas census (son, in Matilda Brock's home) and the 1900 Texas census with S. A. and M. P. Brock. Weak or missing: Census entries only; no birth record, and his death date is unknown. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Son of Solomon Alfred Brock · born 1874
- Research status: PROBABLE — added 24 September 2026 and entered in the family tree the same day, labelled probable there too; the 1880 census of Hilburn Township, Madison County, Arkansas, read from the image, lists John B., 6, son, born Arkansas, in Matilda Brock's household S166; the 1900 Callahan County, Texas, census gives him with his parents S. A. and M. P. Brock, born December 1874, Arkansas S138. Death dates offered by other users' trees are not used, and the John B. Brock of Palestine (died 1942, born Texas) is a different man
- Son of Solomon Alfred Brock and Matilda Pauline Howard; brother of Iona Belle Brock, Mary E., Lorena Lucille and Ada May
- Born December 1874, Arkansas — the eldest of the Arkansas-born children, which dates the family's move from Kentucky
- 🆕 He was a minister at Natchitoches, Louisiana, in 1910, married 8 years to Jimmie, with John B. Jr. and Ruth S458. By 1920 he was a minister at Opelousas, owning his home, with a third child, Edwin, and his mother-in-law Amanda Stewart, which makes Jimmie probably a Stewart S459. In 1930, still at Opelousas, he was a contractor hauling dirt S460. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 Jimmie's parents were probably James (J. T.) Stewart and Amanda Stewart Probable confirm or correct →: Amanda Stewart lived with John and Jimmie as his mother-in-law in 1920 and 1930 S459S460. In 1900 in Opelousas the census, read from the image, lists James Stewart, 48, born Alabama, and his wife Amanda, 42, born Alabama, the mother of two children, both living: Mollie J., daughter, born November 1883 in Louisiana, and Willie, a son S874. Mollie J. fits Jimmie, 36 in 1920 and 47 in 1930. What is weak: Mollie J. and Jimmie are matched only by inference; Amanda's ages disagree (42 in 1900, 70 in 1920); no document read names Jimmie with her parents or gives Amanda's maiden name, and James's middle name and dates are unsourced. Accepted by Earl on 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. added 28 September 2026.
- 🆕 His World War I draft card, filed at Opelousas on 12 September 1918, gives his name as John Berry Brock, a minister on Liberty Street, aged 43, born 5 December 1874, with his wife Mrs. Jimmie Stewart Brock as nearest relative; it describes him as of medium height and stout, with brown eyes and dark hair Confirmed S1170. The card names no parent.

Emily Bowles
ProbableEvidence: The 1870 Owsley County census (Emily, 13, in James Bowles's home), the Bowles family typescript, and her son James Daniel Hawkins's 1967 death certificate naming her as Emily Bowles. Weak or missing: The census states no relationships, and the typescript's dates cannot be right. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Daughter of James Daniel Bowles · born about 1857
- Research status: PROBABLE — added 24 September 2026 and entered in the family tree the same day, labelled probable there too; the 1870 census of Travellers Rest, Owsley County, Kentucky (dwelling 224/220) lists Emily, 13, born Kentucky, third in James Bowles's household after James 39 and Lydia 35 S157; the Bowles family-record typescript S72 lists Emily Bowles, married Ed. Hawkins, with a typed birth of 19 January 1851 and death of 12 March 1881 — the 1851 year cannot be right, because her mother was born about 1835, so neither typed date is used
- Daughter of James Daniel Bowles and Lydia Williams; eldest sister of William Anderson Bowles and Lucinda Bowles Carpenter
- Born about 1857, Kentucky; Emily, 4, in the 1860 Travellers Rest household S171; married Ed. Hawkins (typescript)
- 🆕 In 1880 she was Emily Hawkins, 24, wife of Edward Hawkins, 40, born Georgia, in Hilburn Township, Madison County, Arkansas, with Ellen 6, Harry 4, Allie 3, Elizabeth 3 months, and a stepson William, 16. She gave her mother's birthplace as Tennessee. Matilda Brock's household was in the same township that year S457S166. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 Her son James Daniel Hawkins was born on 12 March 1882 in Crawford County, Arkansas, and died on 31 August 1967 at Huntsville. His death certificate names his parents as Edward Hawkins and Emily Bowles S584. That is a second record of the marriage, and she was alive at his birth in March 1882, after the typescript's 1881 death date. added 25 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1870, before the marriage, Edward Hawkins was 32 and living alone in Valley Township, Madison County, Arkansas. Next door were William, 7, and Eliza, 4, both born in Alabama; William is the stepson of the 1880 household S703S457. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Edward Hawkins probably had a first wife, Missouri C. Buice: an Edward Hawkins married her in St. Clair County, Alabama, on 5 September 1861 S709 Probable confirm or correct →. It would explain the Alabama-born William, 7, and Eliza, 4, next door to Edward in 1870 S703. What is weak: the licence gives no ages or birthplaces, nothing on it ties this Edward to Arkansas, and the 1880 census calls William a stepson, not a son S457. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1910 Edward Hawkins, 72, widowed, born in Georgia, lived with his son Harvey, 34, a farmer born in Arkansas, and Harvey's sons Edgar, 15, and Evert, 13, in Big Springs Township, Benton County, Arkansas S724. Harvey is the Harry, 4, of the 1880 household S584. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Edward Hawkins's parents were probably Nathaniel Hawkins and Charlotte Hawkins Probable confirm or correct →: the 1850 census of District 10, Campbell County, Georgia, read from the image, lists Edward, 11, after Nathaniel Hawkins, 43, a farmer, Charlotte, 43, and Joseph, Syntha C., Permelia A. and Sarah A. Hawkins S881; his age and Georgia birth fit the Edward, 40, of the 1880 household. A Fayette County, Georgia, marriage index has Charlotte Cox marrying Nathan Hawkins on 23 September 1827 S882. What is weak: the 1850 census states no relationships; nothing read ties the boy to Emily's husband beyond name, age and state; the Cox marriage has not been read on the image; and the birth and death dates offered for both parents are unsourced. Accepted by Earl on 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. added 28 September 2026.

William A. Bowles
ProbableEvidence: The 1850 Owsley County census (Wm A. Bowles, 63, with James), the 1863 draft list, and the 1840 Estill County census (Wm Boles, 50–59). Weak or missing: Nothing states “son”; census co-residence only; the 1840 census names only the head, so it fits by age alone. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Probable father of James Daniel Bowles · born about 1787
- Research status: PROBABLE — added 24 September 2026 and entered in the family tree the same day, labelled probable there too; the 1850 Owsley County, Kentucky, census S155 has Wm A Bowles, 63, born Virginia, and Lucy, 45, born Virginia, with James in the household; three Bowles brothers are listed together on the 1863 draft; nothing states “son”. Her maiden name: the 1821 Madison County marriage bond's consent memo says Lucy Thomas, her father Abraham Thomas; Find a Grave says Alumbaugh, unsourced — so it is held as “Thomas?”
- Probable father of James Daniel Bowles, and so grandfather of William Anderson Bowles — two men with the same initials, two generations apart
- Born about 1787, Virginia; a farmer with $1,200 in real estate at the head of dwelling 367, Owsley County, in 1850 S155; husband of Lucy Ann
- 🆕 In 1840 the census lists the household of Wm Boles in Estill County, Kentucky, with a man of 50–59 at its head and a woman of 30–39, which fits William (born about 1787) and Lucy (born about 1805), and eight children and young people under twenty S766. Only the head is named, so this is probable, not proved; an Abraham Thomas, perhaps Lucy's father, is on the same sheet. added 26 September 2026.

Lucy Ann Bowles
ProbableEvidence: The 1850 Owsley County census (Lucy, 45, with James), the 1821 marriage bond memo naming Lucy Thomas, and the 1810 and 1840 censuses (Abraham Thomas in Madison County; the Wm Boles household in Estill County). Weak or missing: Nothing says James is her son; her maiden name rests on the consent memo alone; the 1810 and 1840 censuses name only the head of the house. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Probable mother of James Daniel Bowles · maiden name Thomas?
- Probable mother of James Daniel Bowles, and so grandmother of William Anderson Bowles; wife of William A. Bowles
- Born about 1805, Virginia (Lucy, 45, in 1850) S155. The family tree now carries her surname as “Thomas?” in place of the unsourced Alumbaugh
- 🆕 Her probable father: an Abraham Thomas heads a household of nine in Madison County, Kentucky, in 1810, among the Muddy Creek entries, with girls of the right age to include her and one enslaved person S765. Madison County is where Abraham Thomas consented to her marriage in 1821. In 1840 an Abraham Thomas is on the same Estill County census sheet as the household of Wm Boles, whose woman of 30–39 fits her S766. Neither census names her, so both are probable. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Her father: Abraham Thomas Probable confirm or correct →, by the clerk's memo on Will Bowles's December 1821 Madison County marriage bond, “Abraham Thomas the father of the within Lucy Thomas gave his personal consent” S854S855. Accepted by Earl as probable; what is weak: nothing yet shows that this Lucy Thomas is our Lucy Ann. added 28 September 2026.

Elizabeth Brock Hoskins
ProbableEvidence: Her 1911 Kentucky death certificate, which names James Brock and Betsy Howard as her parents; an 1852 Laurel County birth register naming Levi Hoskins and Elizabeth Brock as a child's parents; the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses, which show Levi and Elizabeth with the same children in the same order. Weak or missing: The death certificate's informant, H. D. Peters, was the undertaker and very probably her son-in-law, writing 80 years after her birth, and the birth register gives no age for Elizabeth, so the Levi Hoskins link is probable. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Daughter of James and Betsy Brock · 1831–1911
- Research status: PROBABLE — her 1911 Kentucky death certificate names her parents as James Brock and Betsy Howard, both born in Harlan County S454. It is the only source; its informant, H. D. Peters, was also the undertaker and very probably her son-in-law (see below), and it was written 80 years after her birth
- Daughter of James Brock and Elizabeth “Betsy” Brock
- Born 26 April 1831, Harlan County, Kentucky; died 1911, Island City, Owsley County, Kentucky. Married, probably, Levi Hoskins (see below) S648
- 🆕 A Laurel County birth register, written at the time, records Jefferson C. Hoskins, born 9 June 1852, son of Levi Hoskins and Elizabeth Brock S648. Probable confirm or correct → This is probably her marriage: her married name, the Brock surname and the Harlan and Laurel County area all fit. But the register gives no age or birthplace for Elizabeth, and no marriage record has been read. If you know more, use “Add to this record”. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Three censuses show Levi and Elizabeth Hoskins with the same children, in the same order. In 1860, at Harlan Courthouse, Harlan County, Levi, 30, and Elizabeth, 30, had Ransom, 9, Jefferson, 7, William, 6, Hiram, 5, Mary, 2, and Solomon, one month old S721. In 1870, in Clay County, Levi, 44, and Elizabeth, 40, had James R., 19, Jefferson C., 18, William, 16, Hiram, 14, Mary J., 11, Solomon L., 9, Caroline, 7, John M., 6, Palistine, 4, and a baby of two months whose name is hard to read S722. In 1880, in Owsley County, Levi, 54, and his wife Elizabeth, 49, had Caroline, 18, John M., 16, Palestine, 14, and Leander, 10 S723. Her ages fit a birth in 1830 or 1831, and the Jefferson C., 18, of 1870 fits the Jefferson C. born in 1852 to Levi Hoskins and Elizabeth Brock S648. None of the censuses gives her maiden name, so the Brock link stays probable. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 In 1910, at Sturgeon in Owsley County, Levi Hoskins, 84, and Elizabeth, 80, married 59 years, were living with their daughter Mary J. and her husband Harden D. Peters S748. This fits a marriage about 1851 and the 1852 birth of Jefferson C. Hoskins, and puts her in Owsley County, where she died. added 26 September 2026.
- 🆕 Her death certificate, read again: she died 13 May 1911 at Island City of cerebral apoplexy. The informant who gave her parents' names was H. D. Peters of Island City, who was also the undertaker. In 1910 she and Levi lived with their daughter Mary J. and her husband Harden D. Peters S748, so the informant was very probably her son-in-law, not a stranger S454 Probable confirm or correct →. What is still weak: it is one statement, made 80 years after her birth; a second record naming her parents would settle it. added 26 September 2026.

Possible father of James Brock · born 1770–1780
- Research status: PROBABLE, and thin — the only link is that both men are on the same page of the 1830 Harlan County, Kentucky census, p.117: James Brock Senr, aged 50–60, and James Brock, 20–30. No record states the relationship; neighbours sharing a name are not proof of father and son
- Possible father of James Brock
- Born between 1770 and 1780 (census age bracket); no wife is named

Abraham Thomas
ProbableEvidence: The 1821 Madison County marriage bond memo names Abraham Thomas as the father of the Lucy Thomas who married Will Bowles, and FamilySearch indexes the same bond; Lucy Bowles's age in 1850 fits a bride of about 17. Weak or missing: No record gives our Lucy Ann's maiden name or calls her the Lucy Thomas of 1821; the tie rests on names and age, and Find a Grave's Alumbaugh is unsourced. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Probable father of Lucy Ann Bowles
- Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. On 28 December 1821, in Madison County, Kentucky, the clerk's memo on Will Bowles's marriage bond records that “Abraham Thomas the father of the within Lucy Thomas gave his personal consent to the match” S854. FamilySearch indexes the same bond and consent S855. Lucy Bowles was 45 in 1850, so about 17 in 1821, the age at which a father's consent was needed S155. What is weak: no record gives our Lucy Ann's maiden name or calls her the Lucy Thomas of 1821, so the tie rests on the couple's names and her age; Find a Grave calls her Alumbaugh, without a source.
- Probable father of Lucy Ann Bowles, wife of William A. Bowles
- An Abraham Thomas headed a household of nine in Madison County in 1810, among the Muddy Creek entries, with one enslaved person S765; in 1840 an Abraham Thomas is on the same Estill County sheet as the household of Wm Boles S766. Both censuses name only the head of the house
- His birth and death dates are not in any record read. The dates online trees give him are unsourced and are not used here
- 🆕 Probably him in 1830: Abraham Thomas, aged 50–60, heads a household in Estill County, Kentucky, three lines above William Boles Probable confirm or correct → S1013. Evidence: the Thomas and Boles names side by side, as on the 1840 Estill sheet S766. Weak: 1830 names only the heads, and Abraham Thomas was a common name. If this is he, his age puts his birth between 1770 and 1780. A Cornealius Thomas, 30–40, on line 16 of the same page may be a son. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. added 29 September 2026

James Wilder
ProbableEvidence: W. M. Wilder's typescript family history (p. 571) names Nancy Wilder, born about 1802 in Tennessee and wife of Moses Williams, as the daughter of James Wilder and Nancy Hays; its Nancy and Moses match the 1850 Owsley County couple by ages and birthplaces. Weak or missing: A compiled family history is the only source and no record gives Nancy's maiden name; p. 572 is unread; the Hancock County, Tennessee, James Wilder of the 1850 census is another man. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Probable father of Nancy Williams
- Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. W. M. Wilder's typescript Wilder and Some Connecting Families, p. 571, “A Tennessee Fragment”: “F-2 James Wilder b in Va. m Nancy Hays, came to Tennessee with his father [David Wilder of Luther, Hancock Co.] and later moved to ‘Old Settlement’ Ky. They had: G-1 Nancy Wilder (dau of James & Nancy Hays Wilder) b in Tenn. abt 1802 d in Madison Co., Ark. after 1878, m Moses Williams (b abt 1799 in Tenn. d 7/27/1874 Madison Co., Ark.)” S863. That Nancy and Moses match the 1850 Owsley County couple, Moses, 50, and Nancy, 48, both born in Tennessee S173, and our Nancy was in Madison County, Arkansas, in 1880 S635. What is weak: a compiled family history is the only source; no record gives Nancy's maiden name; and the entry runs on to p. 572, not yet read. The James Wilder, 60, a tanner born in North Carolina, in Hancock County, Tennessee, in 1850 is a different man S871; online trees give our James his dates and censuses.
- Probable father of Nancy Williams, wife of Moses Williams, and so great-grandfather of William Anderson Bowles; husband of Nancy Hays
- Born in Virginia; went to Tennessee with his father, David Wilder of Luther, Hancock County, and later moved to “Old Settlement”, Kentucky (the family history S863). His dates are not in any record read

Nancy Hays Wilder
ProbableEvidence: W. M. Wilder's typescript family history (p. 571) calls Nancy Wilder, wife of Moses Williams, the daughter of James and Nancy Hays Wilder. Confirm or correct this →
Probable mother of Nancy Williams
- Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. W. M. Wilder's typescript Wilder and Some Connecting Families, p. 571, calls Nancy Wilder, born in Tennessee about 1802 and wife of Moses Williams, the “dau of James & Nancy Hays Wilder” S863. That Nancy and Moses match the 1850 Owsley County couple S173. What is weak: the compiled family history is the only source, with no primary record behind it. Online trees merge her with Jane Wilder, 72 in 1850 and 82 in 1860, wife of the Hancock County, Tennessee, tanner James Wilder S871; that family stayed in Tennessee while the book's couple went to Kentucky, so the birth in 1777 and death in 1870 the trees give are that woman's or no record's.
- Probable mother of Nancy Williams; wife of James Wilder, with whom she went from Tennessee to “Old Settlement”, Kentucky S863
- Her birth and death dates are not in any record read

John Howard
ProbableEvidence: A descendant's query in Howards in Kentucky (p. 127) names John Covey as the second son of John Howard (born about 1774, Virginia; died 1822) and Mary Risner; John Covey Howard's 1850 Harlan household includes a Larkin and a Michael, as in the query. Weak or missing: The query is compiled and unsourced, and no primary record names John Covey's father; online trees' dates and the Magoffin County Risner marriage belong to other people. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Confirm or correct this →
Probable father of John Covey Howard
- Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. Howards in Kentucky, p. 127, a query column, not a sourced genealogy: “Sudie F. Spillman, Harlan, Kentucky, is a Howard descendant and is trying to trace her line from John Howard of Virginia, born about 1774, d. 1822. Married Mary Risner, Scott County, Virginia. Their first child ‘Larkin’ was born in Tennessee about 1802. Their daughter Sarah married Rice Johnston. Their second son John Covey is Sudie's great-grandfather. The other sons were William, Michael, and Robert. Robert was born after his father's death. The other daughters were Elizabeth, Phoebe, and Catherine.” S864. Our John Covey Howard of Harlan County fits: his 1850 household includes a Larkin and a Michael, the names of brothers in the query S865, and his sons' death records name him S455. What is weak: a descendant's query, compiled and unsourced; no primary record names John Covey's father. Online trees give this John Howard births from 1763 to 1779, a middle name Warjack and Georgia parents, none from a record read, and the Magoffin County marriage of James C. Howard and Mary Risner that they attach to him belongs to a later couple.
- Probable father of John Covey Howard; husband of Mary Risner, married in Scott County, Virginia (the query S864)
- Born about 1774 in Virginia; died 1822, by the query only S864; his son Robert was born after his death

Mary Risner Howard
ProbableEvidence: The query column in Howards in Kentucky (p. 127) names Mary Risner, married in Scott County, Virginia, as the wife of John Howard and mother of his second son John Covey. Probable mother of John Covey Howard
- Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. The same query column in Howards in Kentucky, p. 127, says John Howard of Virginia “Married Mary Risner, Scott County, Virginia”, and names “their second son John Covey” S864. Our John Covey Howard's 1850 Harlan household includes a Larkin and a Michael, brothers named in the query S865. What is weak: it is a compiled, unsourced query with nothing primary behind it; the middle name Ann and every date that online trees give her are not in any record read; and the Magoffin County marriage of James C. Howard and Mary Risner belongs to a later couple. An unread index of an 1827 Harlan County marriage of a Mary Howard to Gabriel Jackson may be her remarriage, or another woman.
- Probable mother of John Covey Howard; wife of John Howard; their first child, Larkin, was born in Tennessee about 1802 S864
- Her birth and death dates are not in any record read
