How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Research status
Research status: PROBABLE — the printed
Descendants of Moses Cleveland, p.1939, no. 11632, names Victoria Janette Smith (born 19 March 1844, Ohio) as the daughter of Jeremiah Smith and Patience Kittle
S467. A compiled genealogy; the 1860 Leroy census has a V., 16, born in Ohio, in his home (below), but it gives initials only and states no relationships
Evidence: The printed Descendants of Moses Cleveland (p.1939), which names Victoria Janette Smith as his daughter; a Jeremiah Smith in Perry Township, Wood County, Ohio, in the 1840 census and the 1850 agriculture schedule; his son Lucien B. Smith's 1913 marriage return and 1922 death certificate (Jeremiah born New York); the 1860 Leroy, Michigan census with a V., 16, born Ohio, in his home, and the 1870 census with Lucien. Weak or missing: Only the compiled genealogy names Victoria as his daughter; the 1860 census gives initials only and states no relationships, and the Ohio records are a common name. Birth—
Birth, marriage and death dates not yet found
Census1840
🆕 In 1840 a Jeremiah Smith, 30 to 39, with a woman in her twenties and a girl under 5, lived in
Perry Township, Wood County, Ohio
S651. In 1850 he farmed there, 55 acres improved and 25 unimproved, beside the same neighbours
S652. Victoria was born in Wood County about 1844, so this fits.
Probable confirm or correct → What is weak: Jeremiah Smith is a common name and neither record names a wife or child. If you know more, use “Add to this record”. added 26 September 2026.
Census1860
🆕 In 1860 J. Smith, 54, born in New York, lived at Leroy, Ingham County, Michigan, with
V., 16, a girl born in Ohio, and L., 18, L., 13, and E., 4; no wife was in the house
S713. In 1870 Jeremiah, 64, born in New York and
blind, was still at Leroy, with Lucien B., 24, a farmer born in Ohio, Nancy M., 20, the baby Della A., and Edmund D., 15
S714. V. fits Victoria, born in Ohio in March 1844, and L., 13, fits Lucien
Probable confirm or correct →. The 1860 census gives initials only and states no relationships. added 26 September 2026.

Children1846
🆕 His son
Lucien B. Smith was born in Ohio on 30 September 1846 and died in Leroy Township, Ingham County, Michigan, on
2 April 1922. The death certificate says Jeremiah was
