Chronology

1631 to the present

Only dated, sourced events appear here. Where a date is withheld because the person is living, the entry is withheld with it. The earliest entry is 22 November 1631, the Langenburg baptism of Eva Kreber, daughter of Georg Kreber of Groß-Allmerspach, followed by her 1649 marriage to Hans Gronbach; they are probably the grandparents of Elisabetha Schuster, and so the chain from them is marked Probable. The earliest entry is about May 1673 on a chain of register entries that each name the next generation: the birth of Hans (Johann) Pröger, worked back from his Triensbach burial register. His father, Hanß Pröger of Seibotenberg, is named but has no date, so he sits on his card and not here. On the Coffman line, Samuel and Susanna Coffman (born about 1779) and Martin "Hawkbill" Coffman (died about 1805) come from a compiled genealogy rather than a dated record, so they sit in the Coffman chain; Samuel and Susanna's marriage is the exception: it has a dated county record behind it, so it appears below.

20 February — Nancy Martin Coffman Proeger dies at Austin, Texas, aged 81 S7. 24 February — graveside service; buried at Youngs Prairie Cemetery, Elgin S8S9. 15 March — her memorial at Hope Chapel, where the family-written obituary that anchors this entire record was read aloud S1. The service was livestreamed and is archived on YouTube S73

4 April — Sandra Caffey Falkenberg, Kristin's aunt, dies at San Antonio, aged 76; her obituary independently names the Caffey grandparents S35

13 September — this record research completed, in three passes on one day. The paternal wall comes down on documents alone, and the family confirms the Silva maiden name and William Harry Proeger the same day. A second pass names Louise Martin Timberman and her parents, closing the last gap on the maternal line and solving the Martin naming chain. A third builds Kristin's paternal line three generations deep from the 1950 census and two obituaries — and, in passing, corrects this page's own claim that James Burton Coffman was a brother-in-law rather than a son. A fourth, later the same day, fills Kristin's maternal line two generations deep — Walker, Peters and the Norwegian Selland — closes the exact 1941 birth date behind a signed-in index view, and finds Julius Proeger named as a father on a 1955 California death record.

14 September — the Silva line opens. A county marriage record naming Frank Silva as "Father Of Bride" promotes Aileane's parents from Probable to Confirmed; four new great-great-grandparents arrive — Frank Silva Sr and Anna, Antone and Louise Rose; and the 1900 and 1940 censuses turn the Azores from a DNA inference into a record, with a sixth, unnamed generation behind it. ⚠️ The island did not come with it that day — Pico and Faial were still DNA only, and stayed so for twenty-four hours. Two claims are demoted the same day: Frank's middle name "Thomas," and Mildred's death in 1960.

15 September — the island is settled. Frank Silva Sr's November 1946 obituary is retrieved and read: "He was a native of Fayal, the Azores." Faial moves from DNA inference to Confirmed Confirmed S67, and the notice independently names his lodges, his wife Anna L. Silva, his son Frank Jr and his granddaughter Aileen Roberts. The same evening a lead is withdrawn: the California Death Index entry for a Frank Silva who died at Santa Barbara on the same date is a different man, and the certificate is not to be bought. Pico is not promoted — it stays DNA evidence. Dee Coffman's parents are found the same day, under the KAUFMAN spelling.

16 September — the deepest day of the whole record. On Earl's side: the Kauffman-Coffman genealogy of 1940 yields David Carl Coffman's own parents, taking the Coffman line to generation 7 S66; both Coffman gravestones at Luray are read from the 2015 photographs S83; Dr. James W. Wright's 1878 will is transcribed and names "Mary J., wife of David E. Coffman of Taylor county" S84; the Gerabronn baptism register names Julius Proeger's father S69; and the family typescript supplies two marriage dates S72. On Kristin's side: the Røldal parish registers are read in Norwegian and put three Selland generations on record S74S75S76S77; the Peters–Selland marriage record is finally pulled S71; and the Owens and Walker great-great-grandparents arrive from a death certificate and the 1930 census S70S87. The family identifies the faces in the Coffman group photograph, and Earl settles his sisters' birth order against this page's first version of it.

20 September — a read-only FamilySearch sweep of the paternal line. Julius Proeger's birth parish is resolved from the district town to Kirchberg an der Jagst, inside the Oberamt Gerabronn S69; Minnie Kochendoerfer is christened at Langenburg, eight kilometres away in the same Oberamt, and her parents are named for the first time S124; Julius's father and mother acquire dates and a marriage — Triensbach, 1835 — and above them a seventh generation, Johann Leonhard David Proeger ⚭ Eva Barbara Schmidt, is named S122S123. All of it rests on index entries, not images, and is held at Probable. Two things are closed off rather than opened: a 2009 Proger genealogy of a Chemnitz, Saxony textile family is ruled out on region, settlement, trade and generation, and Allegheny County naturalisation is not on FamilySearch at all — a full-text search returns nothing, making it a NARA Philadelphia request. The contributor who attached the German baptism evidence in 2017 and again in 2024 is almost certainly Earl's cousin Sheryl.

17 September — the page is audited against its own research, thirty findings deep, and repaired. Nothing new is discovered; a good deal is corrected. Mary Jane Wright's death moves to the certificate's 6 December 1934 in the last place that still carried the stone's date. The Coffman generations stop being a prose aside and become a chain with chips and a citation. Four hand-typed totals come off the page for good, including the source count in the stamp above — a number nobody can keep true is not a fact, it is a liability. And the consistency gate that guards this page is rewritten to catch what it missed: case, digits and paraphrase.

17 September — Genealogy research reconciliation. Anna Blanche Roberts's parents identified: Henry S. Roberts and Rose A. Williams, confirmed by four records. Timberman parents confirmed (John H. Timberman + Rebecca Anna Harris, PA death certificate). Martin/Chenault parents confirmed (David Chenault + Louisa Quishinberry; Jane Martin). DNA haplogroups read: Y I-S17250, mtDNA J1c1. GEDmatch AYPR: parents not related (0 cM). Patent number D8,492 corrected to D8,942. Six Coffman/Proeger corrections applied.

18 September — Earl's grandfather joins the research. Uncle David sends photographs of four pedigree sheets Robert William Coffman filled in on 1936 Genealogical Society of Utah forms S103. Two pencilled boxes on one of them — PETER H MARTIN · Nov 4, 1793 and JANE BELL — open a new generation on the Martin line: Peter Hines Martin, 4 Nov 1793 – 4 July 1849, Gallatin, Sumner Co., Tennessee S105, married Jane Bell on 2 July 1818 S106. A second breadcrumb, "m. 5 Mar 1799", finds the Shenandoah County bond of 12 February 1799 S104. ⚠️ The day's best document argues against the family chart: that bond names Samuel Coffman's father as "Geo.", where the chart says Martin — so the generation above Samuel stays Unsupported as stated and is now contested as well as unproven. Two claimed readings of the same sheets are rejected the same day, after re-reading every disputed glyph against a known instance of the same character in the same hand. One had misread the Timberman box's middle name and put his death seventy years late, which would have shifted a whole generation; the sheet in fact reads JAMES HARRIS TIMBERMAN, d. Jan 1919, matching the Ohio death certificate exactly S79, and this page was already right. The other invented a surname for Joseph Martin's wife; the sheet reads NANCY CHENAULT in block capitals, agreeing with the three sources already here. Mary Funkhouser and the compiler's own hedge "Tate (?)" are searched and recorded as not found.

18 September — the family puts names to the faces. Virginia "Ginger" Coffman sends back the Dee Coffman family group photograph with names typed onto fourteen of them and her own caption, "Dee Coffman Family / Circa 1924" S108. Ten are new. Two of the ten are Dee and Mollie themselves — he seated at the centre with the white moustache, she beside him — which answers a question this page had been carrying openly since the 16th. Mary Jane "Mollie" Wright now has a face, the only one of her in this record. ⚠️ Nothing about the photograph's attribution changes: it was always this family's, and this is an addition to it. The names are family testimony Probable confirm or correct →, not a record, and her circa 1924 narrows the page's 1923–1930 estimate without becoming a document.

22 September — Peter Hines Martin's own will is read. It names Joseph D Martin in the children's division, calls William Bell Jane's brother, and leaves a shoe store in Gallatin S172. By evening Joseph Daniel Martin's dates are settled at 1832–1899, Louise Rose's birth moves back to about 1856, Edward and Mildred Rose are shown to be twins, James Bowles's birth narrows to 1830–31, and Jane Bell's birthplace is fixed as Tennessee.

23 September — Nancy Aileen Proeger gets her own dates: born 6 April 1937, Niles, California — never Texas — and died 9 January 1973, Wallowa County, Oregon S275S298. Her stepfather Earl T. Roberts gets his Navy career from the muster rolls — USS Anderson (DD-411) from her first crew, then LST-455 S302S303 — and a 1955 Guam yearbook finds Nancy a senior there S311 and her brother Bill Proeger a freshman, enrolled as “B. Roberts” and identified in the class photo by Earl S313. Nannie Chenault (1844–1915) is Confirmed on her own death certificate S208; Wayne Allen Danielson is identified S297; Dorothy Susan Reid and two probable Martin sons, Robert B. and David B. S172, join the record; and Aileane's cousins list, written for Tasha, is set down. Mildred A. Rose's death is restored — 7 October 1960, as Mildred A Springer S316 — a three-generation photograph of Mildred, Aileane and Nancy is added S323, and Louise Rose's maiden name Mendonça is confirmed S317S319.

24 September — the Wallowa County Chieftain front page of 11 January 1973, shared on Ancestry by cduarte192, is added to Nancy Aileen Proeger’s record: it reports that she took her own life at Wallowa Lake S343. Earl asked that it not be held back.
2026
25 September — three documents held back the day before are published in full at Earl’s request: Nancy Jane Higginbotham Walker’s 1953 death certificate, which names carcinoma of the jaw S331; Dorothy La Vonne Peters Walker’s 2022 obituary, unredacted, as a per-item exception to the rule for minors S36; and a 2015 portrait of Bradley Neal Caffey and Erin with their two children.

Compiled for the Proeger family

Living adults appear in full, on the same terms as everyone else here: what the records say, each claim cited. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
